DHL Strikes Out

I just started a network of blogs about three months ago. It's time consuming to find authors etc - I am not certain exactly how people are going to scale this to a business model but you can bet since Weblogs Inc has been sold, you are going to see a ton of these blogging businesses starting up. Well to monetize the blogs I used everyone's favorite contextual advertising, Adsense. I recently passed the threshold for payment and eagerly awaited my Google check. Google in it infinite and computational correct wisdom mailed my check to my my AdWords Account mailing address. This was undoubtedly part of the Great Google migration to a Unified Field Theory of logins. (Google had users that had seperate logins consolidate them). This meant the check was going to an address that no longer existed ;-)

So I requested a new check. Google gladly shipped a new check immediately. They did so using the world class shipper DHL! DHL a company which has only recently entered the consumer shipping space. Previously they were a business to business shipper which is where I think they should have stayed. I waited roughly one month for payment. Then I thought maybe I should write Google. I did so and here's what I got back.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for your email.

After reviewing our records, I can confirm that your reissued September payment was mailed on Oct 11, 2005. For reference, your DHL tracking number is 9683572813. Please visit www.dhl.ie to track the package.

So I go to DHL.com and look it up

10/24/2005 6:03 pm Returned to shipper. Santa Fe, NM

So apparently DHL attempted delivery on the 12th and shipped it back on the 24th. I called DHL to find out what happened. I know I was in for a rough time for it when the DHL customer service rep said this

"Sir, we held the package for thirty days in Santa Fe. The address was incorrect."

Here's a basic customer service problem. I have access to online tracking information. I can read a computer screen as well as the next guy. Doing simple math I can see that DHL received the package on 10/10/2005 and it arrived in Santa Fe on 10/11/2005. So by any sort of math we are looking at 13-14 days, certainly not thirty. I then pointed this particular fact to the rep on phone, she then said "The address was incorrect." I then confirmed the address with her and not surprisingly it was absolutely correct.

This is strange. Why would a customer service rep lie directly to me? She knows I can view the tracking data to see that the package was held for 13 days, not 30 as she stated. This is what I like to call the "deny all wrongdoing" method of customer service. This has grown more common. With companies' lawyers increasing providing input of every aspect business process, it has become easier to simply lie to customer than to provide customer service. By lieing or misdirecting the customer the company is hoping to lessen any exposed liability by failure to perform. It seems like since Iran Contra, the mantras of "I don't remember" and out and out lieing are becoming all too familar.

I then requested if they could send the package back to me, perhaps via US Mail. They said they could not and requested I contact the shipper. So off to email Google I went. I got the following response from Google on November 15, 2005.

Hello Brian,

I have just spoken with DHL and the shipment will be rerouted to you. They unfortunately could not explain why they only attempted delivery once before returning the package. The should leave a note when they attempt delivery and try a couple more times.

So the package arrived safe and sound on my doorstep the next day? Nope. Instead DHL holds on the package and then redelivers to the wrong department at Google. Eventually the right department finds the check and mails it via UPS. It arrives the next day after two months of attempted delivery by DHL.

Clearly DHL dropped the ball as well as Google. But what actually happened, I don't know but here's my guess. Las Vegas, NM is roughly 61 miles from Santa Fe or 122 round trip. The DHL driver in Santa Fe saw the address on this slim letter envelope and then said, "I will wait until I have more going to Las Vegas." When nothing materialized he then sent the package back rather than actually deliver it.

Here's a note DHL. If you are going to be in the consumer shipping business, you don't actually get to decide what packages are important and which are not. As far as customer service goes, more transparency is better than none. Simply telling obvious and easily disproved lies, has the opposite effect on the customer you may think it has.

If you don't want to deliver a package, don't accept a contract to do so. Or just stick the big container shipping that was your previous business model.

DHL PROBLEMS!!

Tracking num: 39014789741

Dear DHL Readers:

I am posting this complaint about my experience with "DHL" shipping.

They suck completely!

I bought a Sony 3.6GHz Vaio Computer from E-Bay August 9, 2005. The seller used DHL shipping as I wasn't happy about this, the item got shipped. When the item got shipped, I missed the delivery at my house, so I called DHL and said can I go pick it up? They said ok, so I drove to Santa Maria California from San Luis Obispo as DHL said you must be there about 6PM and when I arrived it was 5:15PM and they said they were closed and I said I called DHL informing them I was going to pick up the package and they said they close at 5PM and the Customer Service line said they close at 6PM. However they let me in and I signed over to receive the package. The first 10 minutes when I opened the package, the computer tower was dented.

DHL dropped the package as it looked like, so I filed a damaged package claim 40 minutes after I received the package. That was August 14.

From the date I filed the claim, it took them until October 25th, to grant the claim of recovery.

Second DHL does not deal with the receivers, only the shippers. If you are the receiver and you have the evidence, they only deal with the shipper. If you get an estimate, you have to give it to the shipper and he or she sends it to DHL. DHL will not discuss or handle or say anything about the claim with the receiver at all, it is a bullshit policy. They totally rude, they don't care about anything at DHL Customer service as it everybody is having a bad day and you call to here about it at DHL every time.

Anyway I sent everything over to the shipper, he sent it over to DHL. They've had the estimate of repair now for sometime and when I called to question about the claim, they wouldn't give me any information except the claim was settled and closed. I told them I never got my money for the repair DHL my damaged package and all they could say it is closed, which this was December 28th, since the beginning it happened in August. The shipper never got a check from DHL or was he contacted from DHL on anything. They also lied on several thing prior as well, claiming the receiver was unavailable when they requested to inspect the package and tried to call me, which never happened as I am at my house 7 days a week and my mobile number is open 24/7.

The point is DHL damaged the package and the cost of repair is less than the value of the computer. The repair estimate was $968.18 and they paid nobody on this.

What do I have from this, a broken computer, time wasted from all the time I wasted back & forth with the shipper and DHL, the time was greatly wasted e-mailing, calling and estimates. I have really nothing but a joke from DHL.

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY FOLKS, I could explain this story in more detail if I want but just to get the word out, DHL SUCKS COMPLETELY!

You can view my tracking number online if you wish at: 39014789741

So what do I do now, I am filing a limited civil suit against DHL, requesting the claim to be paid. I will sue for the request and when I am done, I will file the information on the internet for everyone to view my case. I have sued people from E-Bay before but this time it is going to be DHL.

My e-mail is: oxforduniversity1@hotmail.com

if you have any questions, anyway I hope we get this message across and shut this company down. There 2005 advertising ads about better customer service is a big scam. Read the story on USA Today Dec. 12th, 2005 about how bad DHL is and them admitting to their problems. Nothing has been done as what I have seen.

Sincerely,

Scott Marcotte

Here's that USA Today article on DHL's advertising. Advertising good customer service and then not actually delivering is usually a really really bad idea. It really has the effect of destroying your brand.

Thanks for the warning!! One of my suppliers has recently changed to DHL for costs purposes. I was supposed to ship to them charged to their account #. To do this I needed to open an account for our company to have access to the website shipping. I have been told that they are not opening any Canadian accounts for atleast another 3 months (this will make 6 in total so far). I have been pushing them weekly for an update. After reading all of this I am happy that I found out how inept they BEFORE I use them.
Thank-you to all

I also had an ebay purchase that was shipped via DHL. An over sized box weighing 65 lbs. After two weeks I got suspicious and went to their web site to track the package. It said it was delivered 6 days ago and signed by ZENG--with an illegible scrawl. After several calls to their customer service call centers in Boise, in Minneapolis, in Arizona, It was discovered that the driver delivered the package to another address nearby along with two other packages. They gave the address, so I drove by to check it out to see who got my $250.00 item. The house was empty painters were busy tarping and working on turning it over. I felt sorry for the customer service people who all appologized endlessly and gave me a claim form etc. But this company needs to fire a few slackers in their delivery centers. The local supervisor of this driver was most uncooperative and hung up on me.
